Nias. Nice! February 12, 2008

Filed under: Beach, Good Times, Indonesia, Nias, Paradise, Surfing, Uncategorized — afrijen @ 8:25 am

We took a 5 day trip to Nias, a small island off the West of Sumatera. It was hit quite hard by “the” Tsunami, as well as a big earthquake and a few smaller ones later… So I was a little nervous about how it would look and how sad the people would be. It landed up being an extraordinary place. It has history, wondeful people, scenery, culture and the best beach I’ve seen in Indo.

Jono got to do some surfing too, he’s getting the hang of it… I’m sure I saw some sponsors hiding in the palm trees.

I just found your blog by accident and one of the pictures did put on a big smile on my face. I worked in North Nias for more than two years and one of the last joint travels I had with my great team was to Sorake. We stayed at the same place as you did then and the picture I smiled about was the table you pictures at Mama Marynto’s where my staff carved in our organisations name: HELP :-)

    Best wishes from Medan,
    Nico

Oh My gosh! It’s quite strange, I haven’t thought about this blog for nearly a year – until this weekend, when I went back on just to reminisce.
And now you stumbled across it. I’ve always wondered why the word ‘help’ was carved there – but I just thought it made such a lovely pic.
What a magical place Sorake was. One of my all time favourite places in the world. We only there for 5 days over a long weekend and were really sad to leave. And mama was just so kind and had such interesting stories.

I was also living in Medan, and still have a few good friends there. What a crazy city.

Thanks so much for the trip back down memory lane, and for a marvelous coincidence!
      Take care
      Jen
